10 Tips for Nailing Your Husky Ambassadors Application and Interview
Fall semester is here, and we’re beyond excited to recruit a new class of Husky Ambassadors. To help you prepare, we spoke with Husky Ambassadors Recruitment Chairs Nolan Lee and Sarah Lindquist for advice for aspiring Husky Ambassadors going through the application and interview process. We recorded our full discussion and uploaded it as a podcast on Spotify, but if you’re not into podcasts or you’re in a hurry, here are the cliff notes.
1. Know the role
Review the job description before the interview and consider why you’re interested in being a Husky Ambassador. What parts of you and your life connect well with the role and university?
2. Come prepared and arrive early
Give yourself plenty of time to get to the interview, and arrive about 10 minutes early to settle in beforehand. You don’t want to come into your interview feeling stressed or pressed for time.
3. Dress snappy casual
Come looking polished and put together. You don’t need to wear full business attire. Instead, just wear something professional that makes you feel confident and like yourself! The images below are good examples of snappy casual outfits.
4. Practice speaking off the cuff
Not every question will be something you can prepare for in advance, and that’s okay! Practice speaking aloud for 30-60 seconds about random things to help you prepare during the days leading up to your interview. When it comes time for your interview, do your best to remain calm and communicate clearly even if you’re asked something unexpected.
5. Get to the point
Practice telling stories clearly and concisely. Paint a vivid picture for your interviewers while limiting distracting or unrelated details. To help you get to the point, cut filler words and lengthy introductions. Remember, short and sweet stories can be just as memorable as long ones!
6. Show, don’t tell
Give examples that show how you embody the characteristics you’re trying to explain. You can pull stories from past jobs, co-ops, clubs, life experiences, or anything else you find relevant.
7. Listen to the full question
It is perfectly fine to take a moment and even ask for clarity before answering. Don’t feel like you need to immediately respond if you’re not sure what’s being asked.
8. Use confident body language
You don’t need to be the loudest in the room to appear confident. You can appear more confident simply by making eye contact, sitting comfortably, and being engaged. Body language particularly matters because it often carries as much weight and meaning as words.
9. Be ready to adapt
Don’t panic if something doesn’t go as planned. Do your best to carry on and go with the flow if something surprises you.
10. Be yourself
We want to get to know your genuine personality and what you will contribute to our organization. Don’t get too hung up on having perfect answers; we know everyone comes from a different background, and that’s one of the best parts of Husky Ambassadors. Lastly, remember that if you were invited to an interview, it was for a reason, so trust that what you’re bringing to the table is valuable. You got this!
